SIMPLIFY YOUR NEXT PROJECT
WITH LONG-SPAN PLT DECKING

Woodspan has developed PLT long-span structural decking that is ideal for when that extra span is required, a higher strength loading, or when reducing building time is important. This decking product eliminates the need for joists, spanning from bearer to bearer.

We provide two thicknesses at 65mm and 90mm to best match the span required. Our standard width is 310mm wide, and it is possible to simply use a piece of decking on edge for your bearer too. The product is preservative-treated to H3.2 MCA (micronized copper azoles) with a 50 year warranty and is finished with a smooth face on one side and a standard grip-tread profile on the other.

Woodspan PLT decking is made from finger jointed and laminated Radiata pine, produced from sustainably managed forests and engineered to optimise the capabilities of the timber.

FIXINGS

Decking can be fixed down through the decking boards with stainless or galvanised mass timber screws. Alternatively, if accessible from below, fixings can be installed through steel or timber substrate up into decking boards.

For 90mm boards we recommend an 8x180mm screw,
or 8x150mm screw for 65mm boards.
Fixings need to be at least 25mm from the edge.

WAY LESS TIME

Traditional deck design 6.0 x 2.1m = 720 screws
Woodspan PLT deck 6.0 x 2.1m = 42 screws

Fewer holes, fewer piles, fewer bearers, fewer joists, fewer screws = less time.

Coating
stains and oils

Radiata pine is a soft wood and will naturally expand and contract with moisture. The decking has been kiln dried and we recommend coating with a good quality stain or oil to help prevent excessive moisture uptake. It is particularly important to seal the end grain of the decking as this is most susceptible to moisture absorption. Allow an 8mm gap between boards for expansion.

It is also important to consider slip resistance. Any timber deck can become slippery when wet and there are a number of products that can help with preventing slip hazards.

Maintenance

To get the best out of your Woodspan deck, you should maintain your deck every year. We recommend that you wash and maintain your deck during spring and at the end of summer.
Annual decking maintenance recommendations;

  • Remove all furniture and plant pots from your deck
  • If any screws are lose, tighten or replace before cleaning
  • Brush away any dirt that is present with a firm broom
  • Lightly hose your deck all over before applying cleaning detergent
  • Using deck cleaning detergent*, scrub your deck.
  • Wash away using a firm broom and hose with good pressure
  • Repeat the process if any dirt or mildew remains**
  • Sweep off any remaining water
  • Leave deck to dry, and if required apply a coat decking stain or oil to bring new life to the decking boards

* To find the best detergent for cleaning your deck, contact your local builders merchant or deck cleaning specialist to get advice on the best deck cleaner for your deck.
** If mildew remains on the surface of your deck, contact your builders merchant or deck cleaning specialist to get advice on the best mildew treatment for your deck test results for uncoated GT and smooth.

Installation

Decking boards are available in 6.0m lengths. Give us a call for custom production of other lengths, a cut to length solution or factory applied coating systems.

It is important to carefully plan the layout of your deck to optimise spans and minimise wastage. Another key consideration is the weight of PLT decking boards. A 6m 310x90mm piece of decking weighs approximately 75kg so considering how to lift and assemble your deck is important. Although the boards are heavy, the upside is they require considerably less fixings and there is no need for installing joists, the time required to complete a PLT deck is considerably less than a traditional system.
